How to Maximize Traffic to a Website?

The number of people who visit a website, and the pages they click, is called website traffic. It is the measurement of the people who visit your website. Website traffic can be calculated daily, weekly, monthly or even annually. Traffic is essential for any website, as it is the people who read the articles; buy a product, comment or review, or sign up for a newsletter. Traffic is without a doubt the lifeline of a business. Website traffic is not limited to purely the number of visitors to the website, but also consists of the number of pages they click and also the amount of time they spent on that web page.
When you are working hard to increase the traffic to your website, there are three important factors that needs to be considered.
  1. Number of visitors
  2. Number of pages
  3. Amount of time
Engaging the traffic is an important aspect of any website. Hence, exploring the interaction between the traffic and the website is crucial. There are certain key questions to be answered to understand the behaviour of traffic on a website.
  1. Do the visitors bounce right back to where they come from due to lack of informative content?
  2. Do the WebPages have additional resources? E.g. call to action button, further links
  3. Do the visitors interact with other visitors and leave comments?
Traffic Sources:
There are mainly three traffic sources
  • Direct Traffic
  • Referral Traffic
  • Search Engine Traffic
Direct traffic: It is the kind of traffic that comes to a website without searching on any search engines such as Google, Bing or Yahoo. The website is visible to a user who directly types the domain name in the URL box of the internet browser. It is not the traffic that comes to a website by clicking on a link on another website (e.g. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter or directories). It is neither the traffic that comes to the website through search engine ad campaigns (AdWords).
Direct traffic can also be from the following sources:
  • Unmonitored email promotions and newsletters
  • From links in Word, Excel, or PDF documents
  • Visitors coming from 302 or 301 redirects
Referral Traffic: Anything other than direct traffic, excluding the visits that are through search engines. Traffic via referral generally comes from social networking websites such as, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Blogger, Vimeo and YouTube.
Search Engine Traffic: The traffic that comes to a website the relevant keyword search on search engines. Search Engine Traffic is the number of visitors who arrive at a website through search engine results leading to the website. The overall traffic can be segmented to see the percentage of traffic to individual pages and to other sections on the website and this can be done with the help of a web analytics program.
