Wedding photography cannot make do without group photographs. These photographs form the basis of the wedding for the simple reason they capture the couple with loved ones and they actually form the basis of the ceremony as far as creating worthwhile memories is concerned. Group photographs can either be taken after the ceremony within the grounds or close to the church or at reception venues. One of the most basic things you need to do is pre-plan the number of group pictures that are going to be taken, the kind of lighting to be used and the location. In order to capture the best shots, there are a couple of things you need to take into consideration and these are as highlighted below.
Posing
When it comes to posing for group photos, different photographs have different ideas. If you already have your own unique style and the couple agrees to use it, do not think twice about it. However, if you don't have any ideas, you can settle for traditional styles since they are safe and you are assured of getting everyone that matters in the photographs.
- Do not simply look at the faces of your subjects when using your viewfinder. Rather, be on the lookout for anything that might appear to be distracting. Look at postures of the people. Are they clearly visible and standing in the right positions? Where should the groom and bride be positioned in the photographs? Traditionally, the groom should always be on the right side of the bride.
- If there are people wearing sunglasses, ask them to take them off while those with ties should do them up neatly. You have to be firm about the decisions you make in order to capture the best photographs for the couple.
- Before taking your shot, make sure you scan the faces in front of you to confirm they are ready for the shot and while at it, you can also do a countdown.
- For each set, take at least 3 or 4 shots so you can print those that come out perfectly.
Location
This is another extremely important aspect you need to factor in while taking group wedding photographs. In this case, you should come up with a background that is going to have a special meaning to the couple. The background you choose should capture the imagination without been distracting. If you don't find an ideal background, you can take your group to areas that don't have distracting backgrounds and instead use shallow depths (large aperture) in order to blur the background and create the perfect equation.
Equipment and Settings
When taking group photographs, it is always advisable to fill your frame with your subjects to the edges. This is important as it reduces the amount of cropping that needs to be done later. With 1.5 or 1.6 crop DSLR you will do well since its crop factor uses 'sweet spot' of lens. However, if you are using full frame camera's you should exercise caution. Since the edges tend to be of poor quality and the fringing quality is low as well. Consequently, it is essential to leave cropping room. Whether you will use flash or not will vary in accordance to how you place your subjects.
With these simple guidelines, you should be able to capture the best group photographs.
